Injury to the Gums, Lips, or Tongue

Is an injury to the gums, lips, or tongue a dental emergency? While injuries of the gums, lips, or tongue can be unsettling, we may be able to help in cases of minor bleeding. Contact our office to give us the details of your problem and receive instructions as to what to do next.

How you should handle an injury to the gums, lips, or tongue: At first, gently rinse the cut with water to remove any debris. Afterward, apply gauze or a clean washcloth to the cut until it ceases to bleed. You may also apply a cold compress to control discomfort and swelling.

How we treat injuries to the gums, lips, or tongue: We can use stitches to close small cuts in the oral tissues. However, if the cut is big or if the bleeding does not cease after ten minutes of applied pressure, head for the emergency room.
